Frequently Asked Questions
General
Permanent jewelry is a custom-fit bracelet, anklet, necklace, ring, hand chain, or body chain that is carefully welded closed instead of secured with a traditional clasp. It is designed to stay with you through everyday life—and it can always be safely removed when needed.
You will choose your favorite chain and any connectors or charms you would like to add. We will size the piece specifically for you, make sure the fit feels comfortable, and then close the chain with a quick, precise weld.
The process usually takes only a few minutes once your selections are complete.
Not at all. The tiny spark used to close the chain does not touch your skin. A protective layer is placed between your skin and the jewelry while the weld is completed.
It is permanent in the sense that it does not have a clasp and is intended for continuous wear. It is not indestructible—and it does not have to remain on forever.
If you ever need or want to remove it, simply cut the small connecting ring with scissors or nail clippers. Save the chain if you would like to have it rewelded later.

Our selection changes regularly, giving you new ways to create a piece that feels distinctly yours.
Our collection includes a variety of quality metals, including gold-filled, sterling silver, stainless steel, and select solid-gold options.
Available styles and metals may vary.
We are happy to explain the differences and help you choose the best option for your style, lifestyle, and budget.
Gold-filled jewelry has a substantial layer of genuine gold permanently bonded to a base metal. It provides the beautiful appearance of gold at a more accessible price than solid gold and, with proper care, is an excellent choice for everyday wear.
Gold-filled is different from traditional gold-plated jewelry, which typically has a much thinner surface layer of gold.
All metals respond differently to wear, body chemistry, products, and the environment. Sterling silver may naturally oxidize over time but can usually be restored with gentle polishing. Gold-filled and solid-gold pieces are well suited for everyday wear, while stainless steel is known for being durable and low maintenance.
To help your jewelry look its best, rinse away chlorine, salt water, lotions, sunscreen, and other product buildup when possible.
Permanent jewelry is designed for everyday wear, including showering. However, repeated exposure to chlorine, salt water, harsh chemicals, sulfur, and certain skincare products can affect some metals over time.
After swimming or using chemical products, rinse your jewelry with clean water and gently dry it.
Permanent jewelry can generally be worn through airport security without a problem. Fine jewelry typically does not need to be removed, although security personnel always have the final discretion.
Always follow the instructions provided by your medical professional or facility. If they require your jewelry to be removed, cut the small connecting ring rather than the chain whenever possible and save the piece. Depending on its condition, we may be able to reweld it for you afterward.
Permanent jewelry is designed to be durable enough for everyday wear while still being able to break or be removed if necessary. As with any jewelry, it should not be worn when it could become caught in machinery, athletic equipment, or another hazardous situation.
Breakage can happen. Permanent jewelry is made for everyday wear, but it may stretch or break if it catches on something or is pulled with enough force.
Save your chain and bring it to Kay Elise. We will always try to repair and reweld your original piece before suggesting a replacement.
Yes. Cut the small connecting ring with scissors or nail clippers. Avoid cutting the decorative chain itself if you hope to have the piece rewelded.
Kay Elise can also help remove your jewelry when requested.
Yes. Kay Elise chains are always rewelded free of charge whenever the chain remains in repairable condition.
If your permanent jewelry was purchased from another provider, we are also happy to reweld it free of charge when you purchase a Kay Elise chain, charm, or connector during your visit.
Please bring all portions of the original chain with you. We will do everything we can to get it back on before recommending a replacement.
In many cases, yes. If your piece needs to be smaller, we can usually remove links and reweld the chain for a more comfortable fit.
If it needs to be larger, we may be able to add connecting rings, a connector, or another decorative element to extend it.
Available options will depend on the chain’s style, metal, condition, and the amount of additional length needed.
Bring your chain to Kay Elise and we will help you find the best way to adjust the fit while preserving your original piece whenever possible.
Usually! Many pieces can be opened, updated with a new charm or connector, and rewelded. This is a beautiful way to let your jewelry grow with your story and mark new people, milestones, and memories over time.
Absolutely. Permanent jewelry is especially meaningful when shared with a partner, friend, sibling, parent, child, or someone else important to you.
Your pieces can match exactly, coordinate through a shared chain or connector, or reflect each person’s individual style.
Yes. Kay Elise does not have a minimum age requirement. For babies and young children, a parent or legal guardian must be present and comfortable with the child receiving permanent jewelry.
The child must also be able to remain still long enough for the jewelry to be safely sized and welded. We are always happy to answer questions and help parents decide whether the experience is right for their child.
Please tell us about any known sensitivities before selecting your jewelry. We can explain the metals available and help you make an informed choice; however, we cannot guarantee that a particular metal will not cause a reaction.
If irritation develops, remove the jewelry and consult a medical professional when appropriate.
Because permanent jewelry is custom-sized and welded specifically for you, completed pieces are generally considered custom purchases.
Please speak with us before welding if you have any questions or concerns about your selection.
Pricing varies depending on the type and length of chain, the metal selected, and any charms or connectors you choose to add.
You will always be shown the price of your selections before your jewelry is sized and welded, so you can create a piece that feels right for both your style and your budget.
We have over 175 chains and over 100 connectors and charms available in 14k Gold, 14k Gold Filled, Sterling Silver, and Stainless Steel.
